Yes, I have been a Flash Developer for about 6 years or so. Yes, I am slightly biased towards Flash because I have extensive working knowledge of it. But, I do know it’s strengths and limitations, and have recommended it not be used in projects because of it’s limitations. I have many Apple products, and I use my iPhone daily, and am fully aware of Flash not being allowed on it. So, what I am trying to say is, whatever argument there is out there about Flash not being on mobile, and that it has no place in the market anymore, I can argue for both sides. But when the smoke clears, I still stand behind Flash as a great tool to have in your development toolbox.

Most people complain about Flash issues in their browsers, and how it’s a resource hog, buggy, or it just looks at them the wrong way. Some tasks are a bit more CPU intensive, and I will admit that several years ago watching a video could make your computer’s cooling fan spin a bit louder because of the video processing that was going on. But, I am a firm believer that most issues are the fault of the developer that created the app. Any language out there can be written poorly, and give the end user grief. Expensive logic that a developer foolishly executes on every enter frame tick can bring a browser to it’s knees. I can write you a JavaScript function that will make your browser beg for mercy, and then crash. Is that JavaScript’s fault, or the developer’s? Plus, I think many people’s negative comments about Flash come from them mainly seeing it used for banner ads across the web.

I wrote an article for my company “Flash, – a rebirth, not a funeral” that goes into more reasons why Adobe is right to keep Flash around. While it’s typical use will change, it still will be around for many years to come.

Node.js
CouchDB
Riak
Backbone.js
Flare3D
AIR 3.2

I think all the new developers out there just getting out of college, the world is your oyster! When I graduated college in 2001, you really only knew Java, C++, or SQL. A few people dabbled with .asp pages, but the .com bubble just burst, and people wanted to go where the money was… .net of Java. Flash was just a creative tool in most peoples eyes (Sadly for some, it still is), and IE was the only browser on the block ... Read More »

I will try to write up some more on the technologies above soon, and what I find appealing about them.
